A driver is wanted by Victoria Police over the death of a man who got out of his car and was fatally struck on a freeway.

The 23-year-old Thorn Hill man died on the Western Freeway at Truganina at about 11.30pm on Monday.

He was seen driving a white Range Rover at high speed that then hit a rope wire barrier, Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tunk told 3AW radio.

The car then came to a stop near an off ramp, he got out and was hit by another vehicle.

One witness has come forward to describe how she swerved to avoid the man while he was on the freeway, Von Tunk said.

He confirmed one line of inquiry is that a truck hit the 23-year-old.

Anyone with dashcam or any further witnesses have been urged to contact police.
