A man has been arrested after driving rampage through the Melbourne CBD in which he crashed his car into a number of businesses including the Crown Casino foyer.
Police confirmed Wednesday morning that a car being driven erratically along Swanston Street crashed into several business shortly after 11pm Tuesday night.
The driver later entered the basement carpark of Crown Casino, ramming into the foyer.
“He was just going to kill someone because there were so many people on the street,” a witness told the Channel Seven on Wednesday morning.
“I think he (was going) nearly 50-60 km/h.”
The incident comes five months after the fatal Bourke Street rampage in which a white SUV was driven through crowds in the pedestrian mall.
Police arrested a 34-year-old Burwood East man in the gaming area of Crown Casino after the rampage and he was taken to hospital for assessment.
Victoria Police Inspector Stephen Cooper told reporters on Wednesday the man was known to police.
Insp Cooper said the man stopped for a pedestrian at a crossing during the drive and he would be interviewed on Wednesday after undergoing a mental health assessment.
“Police have arrested a 34-year-old Burwood East man following a series of crashes in the Melbourne CBD last night,” a spokeswoman for Victoria Police told The Australian.

“It is believed a male driver was reported driving erratically along Swanston Street, crashing into three businesses just after 11pm.
“The driver then drove to the basement level car park of a gaming venue in Southbank and crashed into the foyer.
“The driver fled onto the gaming floor where he was located by police.”
No one was injured, police said.
Stuart, who was sleeping rough on Swanston St, said he and others were yelling at the driver but luckily there weren’t many people on the street.
“The car went up the [tram] tracks and crashed into a couple of buildings, got to the corner and looked like he went to turn up China Town [Little Bourke St],” he told ABC.
“It all happened very quick. As he backed up he went up on the footpath, we got most of the people off there and we were yelling and screaming for him to get off the path.
“He was just going slow, he came up on the bike path, hit the building and went to the next one and crashed into the next one. I think there was people in front of him and he was trying to get going.
“Anyway we’re lucky. Nobody got hurt.”
Temporary bollards were installed in the area over the weekend in response to recent incidents in the city and terror attacks overseas.
In January, a car drove into pedestrians on Bourke Street, killing six people.
