Man charged with murder of missing Melbourne woman after remains found
A man has been charged with the murder of a missing Melbourne mother after human remains were found near the Frankston Freeway.
Forty-eight-year-old Karen Rae, who has a 10-year-old son, was last seen leaving her Adib Court home in Frankston in April 2015.
Investigators were last week searching bushland beside the freeway at Frankston North as part of their investigation into Ms Rae’s disappearance.
Police said the human remains were uncovered on Saturday but had not been identified.
Tony John Smith, 49 of Langwarrin, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court following his arrest.
His lawyer told the court he had spent the last two nights in hospital for a heart condition and may have suffered a heart attack “or something similar”.
He did not apply for bail and the magistrate told him he would be seen by a nurse.
Asked if he understood, Smith replied “thank you”.
He was remanded to reappear in court on Friday.
