Melbourne Myki fares to rise ‘way above CPI’ in 2017

Public transport fares in Victoria will increase by up to 5 per cent in 2017 but changes to children’s concession tickets means families will get a better deal, the State Government says.

From New Year’s Day, a two-hour trip on Melbourne’s trams, trains and buses will cost $4.10, up by 20 cents.

Daily tickets will jump to $8.20.

A concession ticket will cost $2.05, an increase of 10 cents, while the cost of an annual adult Myki pass will rise by $80.

But teenagers will now be able to travel on concession fares until the age of 18, instead of 16.

Children will travel free until they’re five, up from the current age of four.

Regional fares will rise by no more than 4 per cent, the Government said.

It said the price hike was slightly higher than the Consumer Price Index increase because the costs were rounded up.

“This is going to save significant amounts of money for families, children and young people,” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said.

“Across the board this is about how we can make fares easier to understand, cheaper for some, and recognising too, though, there have been price rises for others.”

Changes ‘well above CPI’

Opposition public transport spokesman David Hodgett said the increase would hurt.

“It just adds to cost of living and it’s well above CPI, and well above agreed price increases,” he said.

“This is going to cost people significant amounts of money on weekly fares, on yearly fares.

“This is just another slug for people.”
