Street racer killed as car flips, bursts into flames

A street racer has been killed after his car clipped another and hit a power pole in Melbourne’s north overnight, Victoria Police has said.

Police said the two cars were travelling at high speeds along Pascoe Vale Road at Pascoe Vale about 1am.

They said they believed the cars clipped each other causing one to hit a power pole, flip onto its roof and burst into flames.

The man behind the wheel, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

“There is certainly some speed involved in this crash,” Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said.

“You don’t snap large wooden power poles completely off that far off the ground unless you have got some sort of speed.

“Young drivers travelling in cars travelling at high speeds engaging in these sorts of behaviours, it’s just perplexing.”

Death means a family member gone at Christmas: police

The driver of the other car, a 19-year-old man, was not hurt and stopped at the scene of the crash.

He was assisting police with their inquiries.

“A member of that family has gone, and at Christmas time he isn’t going to be there, and it’s going to be forever in their minds,” Detective Sergeant Amos said.

“Our message is quite simple. Use the roads, be safe, be patient, be courteous, obey the rules.

“They are minor rules, but when you add them up they become very serious results if you don’t.”
