Acting Inspector Cameron Reinke said police were called to “a very dynamic situation” at the scene in Braim Street about 4:00pm.
“[Police] found three people with significant stab wounds and because of the quick response they were able to take a male offender into custody,” he said.
Acting Inspector Reinke it was too early in the investigations to know if there was a dispute or what it was about.
The women, one in her 60s and the other in her 30s, were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The woman in her 60s is in a serious condition with upper body injuries, while the other woman is in a serious but stable condition, also with upper body injuries.
A man in his 30s is in a critical condition with abdominal injuries, in the Alfred Hospital.
The fourth person, a man in his 20s, who is believed to be the stabbing suspect, is in the same hospital under police guard in a stable condition.
Acting Inspector Reinke said police canvassed the area and had spoken to a number of witnesses.
“Anything like this is obviously very worrying for the community,” he said.
“It was a quick response by the emergency services. It was contained really quickly. The threat is now over.”
