The burglar entered the home through a back door, disturbing the chihuahua, who began growling to alert the owner.
A 31-year-old woman woke her 43-year-old male partner, who then chased the man out of the house.
The offender jumped the back fence and ran away, taking an iPad with him.
There were three children asleep in the house at the time, but no one was injured.
Police said the man was wearing a black hooded top.
