A 24-year-old Melbourne pizza shop worker charged with supplying funds to terrorist groups has been committed to stand trial.

The Federal Police allege between June 2013 and September 2014, Mr El Sabsabi sent about $16,000 to the terrorist organisations Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and Jabhat al-Nusra, via money transfer organisations.

The Court also heard police allege Mr El Sabsabi was also in regular contact with a suspected member of Jabhat al-Nusra through conversations on Skype and messages on Facebook.

According to the Herald Sun, Mr El Sabsabi’s lawyer, Stewart Bayles, told the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday that police could not be sure the man ever fought for the group.

“If (this man) is a dreamer or a scammer … those funds could never have been made available to the group,” he said.

“We say we need proof (he) is a member of the group.”

Mr El Sabsabi was taken into police custody last September, following a series of raids on homes across Melbourne.

Mr El Sabsabi will appear at the Supreme Court for a directions hearing on Wednesday.
