Lay to review Aus Post ‘crime ring’

Ken Lay will review Australia Post’s handling of a Victorian delivery contractor who has been charged over an alleged fraud scheme that took millions of dollars from individuals and government agencies.

The former chief commissioner of Victoria police will start his investigations immediately before reporting back to Australia Post by the end of October, the agency says in a statement on Thursday.

Three men were charged with a series of offences relating to an alleged immigration racket involving Australia Post delivery drivers, after raids across Melbourne on Wednesday.

Australia Post says the men were delivering mail and parcels for the postal service as subcontractors to their main contractor and were not direct employees.

Chief executive Ahmed Fahour said Australia Post was committed to strengthening its compliance oversight of third party delivery contractors.

“While we already have a strong process in place to ensure our delivery contractors are doing the right thing, we can always improve our governance in this area and ensure any alleged inappropriate or illegal behaviour is quickly detected and dealt with swiftly,” Mr Fahour said.
