The house was severely damaged in the blaze, which was brought under control within 45 minutes.

Fire crews have not found the occupants of the house but a search confirmed the building was empty.

The cause of the blaze is believed to be suspicious.

Another fire in South Melbourne has caused around $400,000 damage to a terrace house in Iffla Street.

The blaze broke out in a heating unit and spread through the roof of the home just before 2:00am.
