Runaway groom caught, arrested

Murat Shomshe, who skipped bail so he could attend his own wedding, has been arrested by police in Campbellfield.

Shomshe, 33, was released after the court was told he would lose his $6,000 deposit for his wedding, which was held on July 26.

But after police checked on Shomshe at his home following the ceremony, he did a runner, meaning his bride lost both her husband and the $10,000 surety she put up for his bail.

Shomshe had skipped bail on three separate occasions and has convictions for drugs, violence and weapons offences.

A County Court judge expressed his concerns before releasing Shomshe to marry his sweetheart in front of 473 guests on July 26, despite opposition from police.

“I’m concerned a little bit about the fact there is a firearm out there. The fact that there is a complainant who is probably justified to be in fear, and the fact [Shomshe] has convictions for possessing prohibited weapons,” Judge Maidment said before imposing strict bail conditions.

“Some of the people he’s associating with seem to connect him to some of the bikie gang side of things,” Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton told 3AW.

Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said granting bail for a wedding was unheard of.

“It’s very concerning,” he told radio station 3AW on Monday.

“Our members will find him … and hopefully they do it safely.”

And Iddles was right, with Shomshe captured on Tuesday.

Victoria Police will not comment further because the matter is now before the courts.
