‘Wing icing’ grounds planes in freezing weather
Melbourne’s cold weather has led to flight delays at Tullamarine Airport, with “wing icing” affecting a number of flights due to take off.
Qantas said nine flights had been delayed for up to 40 minutes.

“A number of flights out of Melbourne are experiencing minor delays due to wing icing,” the airline said in a statement.
“Operations are expected to return to normal shortly.”
Five Jetstar flights out of Melbourne have also been delayed due to the same problem.

Virgin Australia said they had one flight to Perth delayed by 20 minutes, which has since taken off.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said morning temperatures had dipped below 2 degrees in the city for the second day in a row.
“We’ve had a pair of days below 2 [degrees] — last year we’ve had a pair of days below two, but we’ve only achieved it three times in 20 years, and yesterday was the coldest morning since 1977,” he said.
“But we’ve finished with the cold mornings, after this it’ll be 14 degrees this afternoon and sunny … tonight, not as cold … we’ll see a low of 8 degrees.”
