Senior Constable Nick O’Brien – who shed further light on the kidnapping attempt – said the 42-year-old coach was walking through the soccer club’s car park before striking up a conversation with the driver of a parked van.

“A second van pulled up and two people armed with guns and wearing balaclavas tried to drag him into the van,” O’Brien told the Hobsons Bay Leader.

“The man in the first van got out and tried to push him into the van but the victim pushed himself off the step and ran away towards a passing vehicle, which scared them off.

“He [the victim] is being informed about the progress of the investigation on a day-to-day basis but is still concerned.

“There is still nothing to indicate why he was being targeted.”

It has been reported that police have interviewed a Taylors Hill man, 38, and a Sunshine North man, 28, but no charges have been laid.
