The woman was found inside a car near Keeley Reserve in Mallawa Street in Clayton South at 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Ambulance Victoria says paramedics were called to the reserve to treat a woman who had been assaulted but arrived to find she had died.

A man was arrested in Dandenong shortly after and is being interviewed by police over the suspicious death.

It is not known how long the woman lay dead in the car before she was found, nor her relationship to the man in custody.

Residents surrounding the reserve were asked by police whether they heard or saw anything suspicious overnight on Tuesday or any time before she was found on Wednesday, the Nine Network reports.
