Vic Police chief Ken Lay resigns
After three years in the top job, Victoria Police Commissioner Ken Lay has resigned to care for his wife who he says is battling a long term illness.
Fighting back tears, Mr Lay said the “deeply personal” decision to leave came sooner than he expected.
“The time is right for me to return the unconditional support [Chris] has given Victoria police, the Victorian community, and me,” Mr Lay said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews commended Mr Lay, saying his decision to stand down was a reflection of his measure as a man.
“You’re making this very difficult decision because of who you are – someone who is loving and caring, someone with the right priorities, someone who is always looking to ntuure and protect those you care about most,” Mr Andrews said.
“You can go certain in the knowledge that we’re greatful that you leave Victoria Police stronger than you have found it.”

Mr Lay said his proudest achievement was his work in family violence and violence against women.
“I was sitting in the upper house of parliament a week or so ago and listening to the government announce the royal commission into family violence and I felt enormously proud when I heard that has been part of the new government’s agenda.”
Wishing departing @VictoriaPolice Chief Ken Lay the best and we thank him for his dedication and commitment to making our roads safer

Sad news Ken Lay is stepping down. A voice of calm leadership when force needed it, always good to media. Best luck to him and wife Chris. — Brett Mcleod (@Brett_McLeod) December 28, 2014
Despite the occasional and inevitable politicization of his office, Ken Lay might have been the best VicPolice leader for some time. — MetaAndy (@Harri_Chas_17) December 29, 2014
