Japanese retailer Uniqlo opens in Melbourne

Japanese retailers Uniqlo will open in Melbourne’s Emporium tomorrow, as the retailer reveals it has plans to open 50 stores across Australia.

Uniqlo has been trading at a pop-up store on Swanston Street before opening its first permanent retail store in Melbourne at Emporium, Lonsdale Street.

Uniqlo parent company Fast Retailing CEO Tadashi Yanai says the company is also looking at sites in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

“You have 20 million population in this marketplace, and we aim for one store per 200,000 people, so 100 stores will be just enough to cover it,” Mr Yanai told News Ltd.

The store has taken on store ambassadors to promote the label in Australia including golfer Adam Scott, around the world sailor Jessica Watson and fashion blogger Sara Donaldson.

On the website Scott says the brand is good to wear “sharp looking clothing” on the golf course and then “head straight out after”.
