Goongerah fire to threaten properties: CFA
Victorian police are urging people living in a remote community in the state’s southeast to leave their homes immediately as an out-of-control fire heads their way.
An emergency warning was on Sunday issued for Goongerah, in the Gippsland region, for a blaze travelling in a northerly and easterly direction.
Police are door knocking and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) has contacted 36 landlines urging people to leave the area immediately.
The CFA says there’s a small window of opportunity for people to pack up and leave their homes before the fire flares up.
“While there’s no threat to life and property right now, we’re expecting the fire to take a run later tonight,” a CFA spokesman told AAP.
“At that time, it will threaten homes and lives.”
