A person has been found dead after a fire in a flat in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra.

The body was found by firefighters who went to put out a blaze at the flat, located in a two-storey apartment block on Malvern Road, in the early hours of Monday morning.

The flat was badly damaged in the blaze, and its cause has not yet been identified.

Police and fire investigators will examine the crime scene.
