Men’s health group sheds light on funding

Leaders in men’s health say they are looking at new ways to respond to the demand created by the popularity of the Men’s Shed program.

More than 300 members of the Australian Men’s Shed Association met in Ballarat over the weekend for their national conference.

The program has set up more then 900 sheds across the country as a meeting place for men to meet and promote men’s health issues.

National president David Helmers says it gets more than $3 million from the Commonwealth but the levels of state and community funding varies.

“State governments in Victoria are probably one of the more successful states where sheds have been funded,” he said.

“There’s a lot of money for infrastructure funding within Victoria, there’s some in New South Wales and unfortunately in some states there’s not a great deal of funding available from the state level.”
