Shire to manage Castlemaine creeks
The Mount Alexander Shire says it is looking for clarity around the management of three urban waterways in Castlemaine.
The council will apply to take over the management of the Forest, Barkers and Campbells creeks, which all run through the town.
The creeks are managed between several authorities and have had problems with flooding in recent years.
Mayor Michael Redden says the creeks are a very important part of the local environment and it is frustrating to have to wait for approval to maintain them.
“Forest Creek and Barkers Creek are the major drains for the town,” he said.
“So it’s really important that they’re maintained, that they’re kept clear of weeds and debris.
“They’re also tourist attractions because you’ve got associated footpaths and bike trails going through it, so it’s really quite important for us.”
