Police have combed parts of southern Tasmania for a third day as they hunt an alleged gunman wanted for shooting at two police cars.

A helicopter, drones and specialist police personnel expanded their search for 33-year-old Robert George Greig on Thursday.

Greig is wanted over a shooting on Monday night near New Norfolk, northwest of Hobart, in which a police car containing two officers was hit with multiple bullets as it travelled to an alleged domestic violence incident.

A second police car on its way to the scene was also fired upon. No one was injured.

Police searched several houses in Brighton and Elderslie on Wednesday night for Mr Greig and the blue Holden Colorado 4WD he is believed to be driving.

“We are extending our search to various locations in southern Tasmania,” Commander Tim Dooley said on Thursday.

Police say Mr Greig may have repainted parts of the 4WD with an undercoat grey colour.

Members of the public have been advised not to approach him.

“Police want to resolve this incident safely for everyone, including Mr Greig, responding police officers and the community,” Commander Dooley said.
