Swimmers were evacuated from a popular beach south of Adelaide after a frightening shark attack on man.

The man was swimming near the Port Noarlunga jetty when he was mauled at about 9.45am on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the scene with reports that a male had been bitten by a shark.

He was helped from the water and treated at the scene by paramedics before he was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The shark victim reportedly suffered injuries to his thigh.

Port Noarlunga is a small seaside town about 30km south of Adelaide.

Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club member Warwick Armstrong told News Corp he rushed to the scene to see if he could do anything to help.

“I would have spent more time as a competitive lifesaver in the water than most people locally, and I’ve only ever seen one shark in the water in 40 years,” he said.

“It’s always been a pretty protected area.”

People have been asked to avoid the area.

In January, a surfer went missing after an attack at popular surf beach the Granites, near Streaky Bay, off South Australia’s west coast.

It was the same beach that surfer Tod Gendle was knocked off his board and taken by a shark in October 2023, with his body never recovered.
