In one of the strangest aircraft crashes of all time, a horse has brought down a light plane at an airfield on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Brentwood, west of Adelaide, shortly after 9am on Sunday, after the plane and the animal collided during takeoff.

The 63-year-old male pilot and his 56-year-old female passenger were able to remove themselves from the damaged aircraft.

The man was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries while the woman was uninjured.

The horse survived the collision and is being treated by a veterinarian.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the incident.
