A woman who drowned at Aldinga Beach south of Adelaide was trying to save a child stuck on an inflatable raft, South Australian police have said.
Police said the woman was pulled unconscious from the water just before 7:00pm on Thursday.
“Sadly, the unconscious woman could not be revived despite the best efforts of paramedics, and also members of the public,” SA Police Senior Constable Matt Brown said.
Hundreds of people were at the beach at the time seeking relief from the scorching weather as temperatures soared across South Australia.
The incident prompted a safety warning from police, who expressed concern about people on floatation devices in the water.
“If you are going to take some sort of floatation device or boogie board or something like that, just make sure if you hop off it you can touch the ground, and just be aware of your surroundings,” Senior Constable Brown said.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner and have asked witnesses to contact them.
