A bus driver is being hailed a hero after sensational CCTV footage revealed the moment he came to the rescue moments after a spectacular airborne crash.

The 66-year-old man leapt into action after a blue Toyota Yaris suddenly speared into the side of his Brisbane City Council bus as it headed back to the depot with his wife on board.

The stunning vision was released on Tuesday, showing the car flying into the bus at a Rocklea intersection in Brisbane’s south about 6.30pm on July 29.

“I’ve seen the footage and I still can’t believe everyone walked away,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“Seeing a car wedged into the side of a bus is something you’d expect in a movie, not on the streets of Brisbane.

“The real story isn’t just the crash, it’s what our driver did next.”

Vision from inside the bus shows the car’s shocking impact before the alarm is quickly raised.

The bus driver can be seen letting his startled wife out before helping the driver trapped inside.

“You right, you okay?” he can be heard asking before helping the 45-year-old female driver out of the car.

She was taken to hospital and treated for shock while the bus driver and his wife escaped unscathed.

“The footage shows the bus driver ran towards danger to help a complete stranger — I am incredibly proud,” Schrinner said.

“Someone was looking out for us here in Brisbane because the freak nature of this accident, it could have ended in such a different way.”

The bus driver’s wife had boarded at the final stop before it headed to the depot – a breach of council rules.

“I’m going to be in trouble because I’m on the bus, won’t I?” the wife can be heard saying after the car landed just metres away from her.

Mr Schrinner said he had written to the council’s CEO to ensure any admonishment was kept to a minimum for the heroic bus driver, a veteran of seven years’ service.

“We’ll let that one go through the keeper,” he said.

The car catapulted into the bus after the driver swerved to avoid a SsangYong vehicle and hit a median island.

The SsangYong driver was later issued a traffic infringement notice for driving without due care and attention which carries a penalty of a $690 fine and loss of three demerit points.
