Two bodies have been found in the water after male swimmers went missing at a popular Queensland waterfall.

A search operation was under way on Tuesday at Millaa Millaa Falls, a tourist attraction about 90 kilometres south-west of Cairns.

Initially it was reported that two male swimmers in their 20s had jumped off the falls, a 16 metre drop, about 8.55am.

However The Cairns Post reports the pair had entered the water for a morning swim before failing to resurface.

A spokesperson for Queensland Police said a third male was taken to hospital.

There are roads into the waterfall for emergency crews to use for the search operation, but accessibility was difficult for rescue helicopters.

Earlier, Queensland Ambulance Service’s far north director Chris Draper said three men in their 20s had jumped from the falls into the water but two had not surfaced.
