A man has been charged with allegedly sending death threats to a federal member of parliament.

Federal police arrested the 39-year-old at Brisbane International Airport on Tuesday and charged him with two counts of using a carriage service to threaten to kill another person and five counts of using a carriage service to harass, threaten or menace.

The man, of no fixed address, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody to appear on Friday.

Commander Naomi Binstead said the AFP took the safety and security of Australian high officeholders seriously.

“The AFP supports political expression and freedom of speech, but when it leads to criminal behaviour – including threats and harassment – it will not be tolerated,” she said.
