A rescue operation for a man missing in waters off the Queensland coast after a yacht sank has resumed, a day after crews found a woman floating in the ocean.

The pair were on the boat off the northern tip of Fraser Island, also known as K’gari, when they made a distress call about 8.30pm on Sunday after it started taking on water.

After a night in the sea, the 25-year-old woman was spotted by aircrews just before midday on Monday. She was winched to safety before being taken to Bundaberg Hospital for treatment.

Crews resumed the air and sea search for the missing man on Tuesday morning. Multiple vessels are involved, including water police and Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay as well as aircraft.
