A Queensland prisoner has been charged over 60 historical rapes and related offences allegedly carried out over two decades.

The 47-year-old was first charged over the jail assaults in 2015, but a police taskforce has uncovered many more victims allegedly attacked between 1994 and 2014.

The man is facing at least 60 charges including rape, assault with attempt to rape, indecent assault, sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.

He is serving time for similar offences.

The man did not appear when his case was mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He was remanded in custody to reappear on July 30.
