A man has been shot dead and another has head injuries after a night of violence at a house west of Brisbane.

Neighbours called police after hearing gunshots at a property in the Ipswich suburb of Booval at about 2am on Friday.

When officers arrived they found a man dead from gunshot wounds.

A second man at the property, who had minor head injuries and was complaining of chest pain, was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police are hunting for the gunman, as forensic officers scour the crime scene for clues.

One resident told of being woken by gunfire.

“Just a shot. That was it,” the unnamed man told the Nine Network.
