Emergency services are at the scene of the explosion on Deighton Street.
An exclusion zone has been set up and residents have also been evacuated following the 7:00am blast.
Superintendent Russell Miller said the caravan was “totally destroyed” and a nearby house was still on fire.
The explosion was believed to have been caused by two gas bottles.
“The explosion was heard across the city from what I’ve heard,” he said.
“Anybody who lives in those areas, we’ll be helping them out, evacuating them out, until we can ascertain that it’s safe to move them around.
Superintendent Miller said police were unsure what had caused the blast.
“Obviously there needs to be an investigation by us and also by the fire service as to what occurred,” he said.
“We also have our scientific people on way from Townsville.”
