A woman armed with a gun has held up a bank, sending schools into lockdown in Ipswich.

The woman entered the bank, believed to be the Redbank Plains Bank of Queensland branch, at about 10am on Friday and got away with cash.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman told AAP some local schools enacted their own lockdown procedures as a precaution and police were still searching for the woman.
