‘He grabbed it by the hair’

A surfer on Queensland’s Gold Coast has reported spotting a body off Palm Beach, sparking a major air and sea search.

Sergeant Tony Nelson said the alarm was raised this morning, by a group of surfers.

“One of them had just caught a wave and he fell off the board – when he was coming to the surface, he felt something in his hand,” he said.

“He grabbed hold of that and when he pulled it up, it appeared to be a deceased person.

“He grabbed it by the hair, so he was quite shocked of course he let it go and it disappeared from view.”

Sergeant Tony Nelson said little else was known at this stage.

“We’re trying to identify whether anybody is missing,” he said.

“We are looking for again assistance from the public.

“If somebody hasn’t come home, if somebody you know who perhaps comes down here for a morning swim – could you just check to make sure that they are home – because at the moment we just have no idea who may be missing.”
