Police said the scuffle between the men lasted for several minutes before Mr Posiano walked away and collapsed 50 metres from the scene.
Detective Senior Sargeant Michael Thiesfield from Queensland Police said both men threw punches and had to be separated by bystanders.
“Part of that altercation has gone on to the roadway of the shopping complex and then gone back on to the footpath of the shopping centre,” Sgt Thiesfield said.
Mr Posiano was in his Ford Territory when the incident occured with the 24-year-old, who was in a Holden Commodore.
“We understand that the Territory was parked near a pedestrian crossing and that, at some stage, the Holden Commodore has overtaken it within the carpark complex and parked.”
Shocked members of the public, as well as doctors from a nearby medical centre, tried to resuscitate Mr Posiano but he died at the scene.
More than a dozen mourners have reportedly returned to the scene to pay their respects to the “great man”.
Police are treating Mr Posiano’s death as suspicious until determined otherwise.
