One punch, still recovering

The mother of a central Queensland student says her son still hasn’t recovered from an unprovoked attack more than 18 months ago.

Clay Boyd suffered a broken nose and severed artery after being punched at a Yeppoon hotel in 2012.

His attacker, 23 year old Jonathon Peter Grice, was due to be sentenced in Rockhampton’s District Court yesterday on a charge of grievous bodily harm.

However Grice did not turn up, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Karen Boyd says her son’s life still has not returned to normal.

“Physically he’s got ongoing issues with his noise, which he has got an appointment with his specialist when he comes home from uni,” he said.

“Emotionally he has only just started to speak about it, like he says it’s changed his whole outlook on life, he’s fearful of when he heads out.

“‘He doesn’t trust people in society, he doesn’t trust people in general, he doesn’t like being in a crowd.”

‘No remorse’

Mrs Boyd says it is clear that Grice was not sorry for his actions.

“18 months down the track it’s been and this person seems to have been still making up his mind what his plea is,” he said.

“I gather from things that I’ve found out about this person that he hasn’t taken a backward step at all or recognised any consequences that has happened to Clay that is a definite sign of no remorse.

“People just can’t go around randomly assaulting people and expect to get off.

“I’ve experienced how close you can come to losing a child and I know there’s people out there who have lost a child.

“The person who did this he should realise that he should be lucky to be answering to a grievous bodily harm charge, it could have went the other way and he could be answering to a charge of murder.”
