QLD man killed in Canada snow accident

A Queensland man has been killed in a snowboarding tragedy in Canada.

Sunshine Coast man Dale Steward was killed while snowboarding at the Revelstoke Mountain Resort on January 10.

According to the Revelstoke Times Review, skiers found an injured man on the mountain’s Devil’s Club run.

Emergency services were called but Mr Steward died at the scene.

It’s believed Mr Steward hit his head on the way down the mountain.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokeswoman confirmed the death of a 26-year-old as a result of a snowboarding accident.

“Consular officials from the Australian Consulate-General in Vancouver are liaising closely with local authorities,” she said in a statement.

She said DFAT was providing consular assistance to the family.

AAP has been told Mr Steward had been living and working in Edmonton, Alberta for the Canadian summer before recently heading to Revelstoke Mountain.

The Mountain Creek State High School former student was one of about 30 Sunshine Coast friends who travelled to Canada in 2012.

A friend, who asked not to be named, told AAP many friends would now return home.

“It’s so hard because it’s so tight knit,” he said on Tuesday night.

“He was not a massive risk taker that is why I was so surprised.

“He was kind of quiet and flew under the radar but once you knew him, he was the funniest guy you’ll ever meet.

“He was super loyal as well.”

Mr Steward had met his girlfriend while living in Canada, the friend said.
