Darwin man dies in custody

A man has died in custody at the central Darwin police station watch house after being arrested for alcohol offences.

The 59-year-old was taken into custody at about 6pm on Thursday, police said, and was found to be non-responsive during a routine cell check three hours later.

The watch house nurse and paramedics confirmed the man was dead.

The Crime Command has begun a full investigation for the coroner.
