Asylum seeker ‘self-harms’

A teenage girl is in hospital after reportedly jumping off a building at a Northern Territory detention centre.

A Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network spokesman told AAP the 17-year-old is being treated at the Royal Darwin Hospital for a pelvic injury following the incident on Sunday.

The hospital declined to comment on her condition and referred inquiries to the Immigration Department.

The girl was being detained at Darwin’s Wickham Point detention centre.

A spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said it was longstanding government practice not to confirm or comment on reports of self-harm.

She maintained that detainees receive appropriate health care.
