Police have fatally shot a man after he allegedly aimed a rifle at officers responding to a crashed vehicle.

NSW Police had responded to reports a car had driven into a tree on a road 84 kilometres north of Yass about 2.50pm on Sunday.

Officers found a Chrysler station wagon that had crashed into a tree, with the driver appearing unconscious in the car.

When the officers approached the man to help him, he allegedly aimed a rifle at them before police shot him. He died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts by police.

The driver is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 45, police said.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the incident has begun.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty will provide an update later on Monday.

The investigation will be the subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
