Plumber executed in ‘brutal, targeted’ suburban hit

The “very brutal and distressing” execution-style shooting of a young plumber in his driveway has all the hallmarks of a targeted hit, police say.

Two people are on the run after the shooting in Condell Park, in Sydney’s southwest, on Monday night, that left 23-year-old John Versace dead.

His family remembered him as “the world’s greatest brother, son, grandson, cousin, and friend”.

CCTV of the incident shows Versace returning home about 10.30pm and backing his car into the driveway. Another car pulls up and parks him in.

A man holding what is believed to be a Glock pistol exits the second vehicle from the rear driver’s side door and fires up to 10 bullets at Versace.

At least four hit the victim, NSW Police Superintendent Rodney Hart said.

“He slumped to the ground at the front of his home and the offender returned to the hatchback,” he said.

“We believe this is … extremely brutal and violent execution-style murder is a targeted attack.”

About 20 minutes later, police found a car in nearby Fairfield East, believed to have been used in the shooting. It had been set ablaze.

A Glock pistol was found inside.

In a Facebook post, Versace’s sister said the family was heartbroken by the death.

“John, no words can describe the pain we are all feeling and will continue to feel for the rest of our lives,” she wrote.

“We are so lucky and blessed to have had the time we had with you but your life was cut too short … you did not deserve this.”

Versace and his family are not known to police and there are no known links to organised crime, Hart said.

“We believe he is a plumber and possibly working in his father’s business,” he said.

“We need to look at who he is involved with, who he knows and what he did leading up to this brutal attack.

“This has all the hallmarks of a targeted, brutal hit, so that is what we are treating it as.”

Police believe Versace lived at home with his parents, along with adult sisters.

Detectives are asking for anyone with information, including CCTV, to contact Crime Stoppers.
