A man has been charged with attempted murder after a shocking incident of alleged domestic violence in Sydney that left six people injured.

It follows a rampage that began after a car crash at Engadine, in the city’s south on Sunday.

NSW Police said emergency services were called to the intersection of the Princes Highway and Old Bush Road about 9am on Sunday following reports of a two-vehicle crash and an alleged stabbing.

On arrival, police found a white Jaguar and a blue Mitsubishi Lancer had collided.

“A 58-year-old man – who appeared to be suffering stab wounds – was seen allegedly running from the crash scene. He was taken into custody with the deployment of a Taser,” a police statement said.

One officer suffered a serious cut to his left wrist, allegedly during the arrest.

Police say the 58-year-old driver of the Jaguar reacted violently and crashed the car when his 48-year-old partner changed the car radio station.

Cronulla NRL club chair Steve Mace, who saw the incident unfold, lauded a fellow passerby who intervened and put himself between the woman and the allegedly knife-wielding driver despite suffering a serious stab wound.

“Getting her in and out of that car to dodge the stab wounds was unbelievable,” Mace told Sydney radio 2GB on Monday.

Video from witnesses shows a man holding the passenger door shut as another man, with blood across his white shirt, moves about the rear of the car, shouting.

“The first time you were dodging swings, like deadset swings, and all he was carrying on was about a radio station getting changed,” Mace said.

“Then it was ‘you’re all gone anyway because you’ve all got the jab’.'”

The woman reportedly needed to be calmed after she saw her partner run up the street when police arrived.

“All she was worried about was him and what the police were doing to him,” Mace said.

The other good samaritan was also among the injured, with police saying a 67-year-old man had a cut to his abdomen. He was taken to hospital, where he remained in a stable condition on Monday.

The 20-year-old female driver of the Lancer had a broken wrist, while her passenger was also injured.

The 48-year-old woman was in a stable condition in St George Hospital on Monday.

The 58-year-old Jaguar driver was in a serious but stable condition under police guard in Liverpool Hospital.

He was charged on Monday afternoon with several offences:

  • Cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder domestic violence related;
  • Wound person with intent to resist/prevent arrest;
  • Reckless wounding;
  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous;
  • Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm;
  • Assault occasioning actual bodily harm;
  • Affray;
  • Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

Police say the driver was known to them but not for domestic-violence matters involving the woman. He was refused bail to appear in court later on Monday.

Earlier, NSW Premier Chris Minns credited the “incredibly brave” people who intervened during the attack.

He noted a “cruel irony” in an apparent incident of domestic violence occurring as NSW Police ran a major operation targeting the crimes at the weekend, arresting 550 people.

“Unfortunately, [domestic violence] is increasing in NSW and we need to throw more resources at it,” he said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the episode as shocking and distressing.

“We’re thinking of all those who were injured and hoping for their quick recovery,” he posted to social media platform X.

Investigations into the incident continue.
