A search is resuming for two standup paddleboarders believed missing off the NSW north coast.

Emergency services were called to Wellington Drive at Nambucca Heads following reports the boarders were missing about 6:30pm on Monday.

They were last seen approximately one kilometre offshore, between Nambucca Heads and Scotts Head.

A land and sea search was launched, with efforts on the water suspended at 10pm due to dangerous surf, police said in a statement on Tuesday.

A multi-agency operation was expected to get underway on Tuesday morning.

The paddleboarders were reported to be wearing a red shirt and a yellow shirt.
