A body has been found in a pond of one of Australia’s most prestigious private golf clubs.

Police found the male body in The Lakes Golf Club at Eastlakes in southern Sydney about 9.30am on Wednesday after reports of a concern for welfare.

Water police and aircraft were involved in the investigation, with Marine Command retrieving the corpse and Pol-air hovering over the scene.

The 95-year-old club, founded in 1928, describes itself as one of Australia’s “pre-eminent private clubs and one of the leading major tournament venues”.

It has hosted the Australian Open on seven occasions, including four times since 2010.

The club has a permanent waiting list for membership.

Prospective members aged over 40 are charged a $40,000 entrance fee and $5700 annually for a full membership.
