Those planning on taking to the water for a spot of fishing are being warned of potential gale force winds along a stretch of the NSW coast in coming days.

Marine authorities on Friday said gale warnings issued by the weather bureau mean water activities on Saturday could be too dangerous.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Stuart Massey said the forecast conditions won’t be favourable for boating.

“When a gale warning is in place the best advice is to stay home,” he said.

“The forecast winds will make boating dangerous, it simply isn’t worth the risk.”

The Bureau of Meteorology’s warning for gale force winds on Saturday includes the Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra and Batemans coasts.

Strong winds are expected in Sydney’s enclosed waters, as well as the Macquarie and Eden coasts.

Insp Massey said when a gale force warning is in place, winds can average between 34 and 47 knots, or 63 to 87km/h.

“We ask all boaters to check and monitor weather conditions every time they go out,” he said.

The bureau issued a warning on Friday for damaging winds in NSW stretching from the Victorian border up to the Central Tablelands.

It said a vigorous westerly flow will develop over southern NSW during the early hours of Saturday, with blizzard conditions expected for the Snowy Mountains this weekend.
