NSW greyhound ban to make government ‘unelectable’: MP

A New South Wales Nationals MP has called for the Government to reverse its decision to ban greyhound racing, warning the issue has made the Government “unelectable”.

The ban will come into effect in July 2017, despite a backlash from several Nationals MPs who crossed the floor and voted against the move.

In an leaked email to Cabinet, Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser warned the decision would completely reverse the Government’s political fortunes.

Mr Fraser said the Government faced a dire result in the safe Nationals seat of Orange at the upcoming November by-election because of the decision.

But he said it was not too late for the Government to save some political skin.

“I think we’re in dire straits in Orange, and I believe that the greyhound decision is one that is affecting us badly in that seat which once was, under the previous member, a stronghold,” Mr Fraser said.

“I don’t think there is a problem with the Government changing its mind on anything.

“We need to listen to the people, hear what’s being said, and act accordingly and that’s basically what I’m asking the Premier and Cabinet to do.”

Mr Fraser said while he was proud of the Government’s achievements, they meant little to voters concerned about the approach to greyhound racing.

“I believe that the Government, over the last five years, has done a fantastic job with infrastructure, employment, new health facilities, you name it,” he said.

“But it’s the small issues, the ones that don’t seem important which quite often change votes.

“I don’t believe building new hospitals … actually win.

“It may retain you votes, it won’t lose you votes, but issues such as the greyhounds will lose you votes and can cost you government.”

The ABC understands that other MPs have also been privately lobbying for a back down.

But a spokesman for Premier Mike Baird said the Government remained 100 per cent behind the policy.

Mr Baird announced the Government had decided to ban the practice after a special commission of inquiry report found widespread evidence of animal cruelty in the sport.

Meanwhile, NSW greyhound owners could receive a payment of up to $1500 per dog under a compensation package being considered by the state government as part of its controversial racing industry ban.

People will get more for racing dogs than retired dogs under the $30 million compensation package, according to The Daily Telegraph on Friday, as the sport is set to be banned in NSW from July 1 next year.
