Police and the community have roundly condemned the alleged actions of a man and a woman, accused of stealing a handbag from a fatally injured woman trapped in the wreckage of a car.

The man accused has been refused bail, with police describing the alleged crime as “disgusting”.

Kay Shaylor, a 62-year-old aged-care nurse, suffered multiple injuries when two cars collided in North Gosford, on the NSW Central Coast, earlier this month, but later died in hospital.

Ms Shaylor’s brother, Hilton told The Daily Telegraph his sister was lucid as paramedics battled to save her at the scene.

“How heartless can you be to do that to someone when they’re dying?” he said.

“I was told the woman was looking after Kay, holding her hand and checking her pulse and telling her she’ll be ok.

“I just hope Kay was not aware of what [was happening] because it would kill me to think she knew she was being robbed as she was dying.”

After being alerted to withdrawals from the woman’s account after her death, investigators discovered her credit cards and cash had been stolen while she was trapped in the car, police said.

Officers said the cards were used to purchase food, cigarettes, alcohol and a fishing rod.

Police early yesterday arrested and charged Jason Hall, aged 42, and woman, aged 44, with theft and fraud offences.

Hall showed little emotion as he was led into Gosford Local Court, but became agitated after bail was refused.

After screaming expletives at corrective services officers and kicking the dock he was taken from the courtroom.

Magistrate Robert Williams said Hall had a lengthy criminal history and non-compliance of court orders which made granting bail impossible.

The court heard he was due to start chemotherapy for bowel cancer tomorrow.

His defence lawyer asked that he be granted strict conditional bail due to a history of mental health issues and anxiety.

Hall pleaded not guilty and the matter was scheduled to return to court on October 25.

His case is due to be handled by Aboriginal Legal Services.

The woman was earlier granted bail and set to appear in the same court on September 27.

Brisbane Water Police Superintendent Danny Sullivan said the incident had left Ms Shaylor’s family distraught.

He said she was a “much loved member of our community” on the central coast.

Superintendent Sullivan said the man and woman were charged on the day of Ms Shaylor’s funeral.

Earlier, NSW Police Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said the couple allegedly stole the woman’s bag while she was trapped inside her car.

“We will allege that a woman’s handbag was removed from the scene,” Detective Inspector Zdrilic said.

“That handbag belonging to a person who was trapped in a car at the time.

“We will further allege that the cash and credit cards were removed from that handbag and then that handbag was returned to the crime scene.”

“Police in the area, in general, we are disgusted with this crime.”

A 20-year-old woman, who was allegedly drug-affected at the time, crashed head-on into Ms Shaylor’s car.

The woman has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and driving while suspended over the crash.

That matter remains before the court.
