A 36 year old woman has been charged with murder after the body of a two year old girl was discovered at a home in Miller in Sydney’s south west.
Authorities were called just after midday on Tuesday following reports of concerns for the child’s welfare.
The ABC understands a relative of the child’s mother, who went to the Merino Street home to check on the family but could not enter the house, contacted emergency services.
Police officers discovered the two-year-old’s body when they arrived at house.
A woman has now been arrested and will appear in Penrith Local Court Wednesday.
A NSW Police statement said Green Valley Police detectives “will speak with the child’s relatives and neighbours in an effort to determine the chain of events leading to the child’s death”.
‘Next of kin’ raised the alarm: neighbour
Neighbour Patricia Ingram said a woman who said she was the family’s next of kin had knocked on her door on Tuesday morning asking if she had seen the family.
“She knocked on my door and asked me if I had seen them and I said I hadn’t seem in a while,” Ms Ingram said.
She said the woman was concerned about the child because she had not seen them and asked Ms Ingram for a ladder.
“And I said, well if you really are concerned, just call the police and they’ll be here quick smart.
“And next the street was full of police.”
Neighbour Patricia Ingram said the alert was raised by a family member.
Shannon Francesco, another neighbour has described the girl fondly.
“Little, dark, curly hair, she’s just gorgeous,” Mr Francesco said.
“I’m blown blown away … it’s absolutely crazy.”
Several ambulances attended the location.
Ms Ingram said the residents of the house had always been quiet but she had not seen them for a few days.
“I’ve just got a little one in there, she’s only 18-months-old, my granddaughter and I’d hate to think if something had happened like that,” Ms Ingham said.
“It’s terrible.”
Miller is a suburb in the Liverpool Council area.
