Woman’s body pulled from water

NSW police have found the body of a woman, believed to be in her 20s, in the water off Cabarita Wharf in Sydney.

They said the woman’s body, found just before 11:30pm, showed signs of an apparent assault.

Paramedics were unable to revive her.

Police said a man was taken to Burwood Police Station, but no charges have been laid.

Lauren Maher from NSW Police said a man was being questioned.

“Emergency services were called to the wharf there at Cabarita following reports of a woman being assaulted,” she told 702 ABC Sydney.

“When officers from Burwood Local Area Command attended, they found a woman in the water.

“CPR was commenced but unfortunately she was unable to be revived.

“We did arrest a man at the scene and he’s been taken to Burwood Police Station, and obviously police have established a crime scene there, which forensic specialists will examine today.”

ocal resident Trisha Panayi said she heard sirens late on Thursday night.

“We just heard sirens going into park, about six police cars, and an ambulance, and then since 11:30pm the road’s been closed off,” she said.

“[I’m] a little bit rattled. Nothing like this has happened around here before, so it’s a bit scary.

“We had somebody knocking on the door first thing in the morning, just to find out if we heard anything, and that’s when we realised something terrible had happened.”

Cabarita Wharf, at Cabarita Point Park in the city’s inner-west, is served by ferries running between Circular Quay and Parramatta.
