Police believe the boat was towing two water skiers and participating in trials for the Bridge to Bridge Race when it lost control and flipped.

Police said a 44-year-old man who was an observer on the boat died at the scene.

The man driving the boat was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two men who were being towed on skis behind the boat were uninjured and managed to swim to shore.

Officers from Hawkesbury Local Area Command and Broken Bay Water Police have established a crime scene which will be examined by forensic officers.

Police divers will attempt to recover the boat.

All events on the river have been stopped for today while detectives from the Marine Area Command continue investigations into the crash.

Twelve months ago, world waterskiing champion Sarah Teelow was killed after a high-speed fall during the Bridge to Bridge race.
