Rural women gather for Scone conference

A rural women’s conference held in the Upper Hunter has heard that volunteering and informal support networks remain vital in assisting country women during hard times.

Hundreds of women attended the weekend Rural Women’s Gathering in Scone, an annual event that includes workshops and networking opportunities.

Organiser, Caroline Hayes says she’s hoping women will take home a renewed sense of their contribution to the rural economy.

“Women often don’t recognise how important they are and the contribution that they make and also to be supportive of each other,” she said.

“We’ve heard stories of how people have been put down and not found the help they need, and other stories where they have received that help and that hand up, not the hand out.

“About how much that has influenced them and how much it has enabled them to improve things, for themselves, and for others, we need to be kind to each other.

“The ladies have had the most awesome weekend, the feedback is just wonderful.”
